Discover Floriston California

In the adjacent hillsides behind Glenshire, California, the quaint community of Floriston has a rich and colorful history. Located in Nevada County, on the California side of Lake Tahoe, Floriston and Boca are two historically significant towns. Both towns are known for their roles in the state's industrial and transportation history during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Boca, located near the confluence of the Little Truckee and Truckee Rivers, served as a railroad hub from the 1860’s. Today, Boca is primarily known for outdoor recreational activities, including fishing, hiking, and camping, as it is situated near the Boca Reservoir and surrounded by the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

History of Floriston

Floriston, the town of flowers, is a small community located in Nevada County, California. It is adjacent to the Truckee River, and just a few minutes east of Truckee. For those seeking an entry-level home in Lake Tahoe, Floriston offers great values.

The town was established in 1899 by the Floriston Pulp and Paper Company, which was attracted to the area due to its proximity to timber resources and the Truckee River, which provided hydropower.

The Floriston Pulp and Paper Company constructed a large mill for the production of wood pulp and paper products. The town quickly grew around the mill, attracting workers and their families.

Living in Floriston

The company town of Floriston was highly self-sufficient, with its own school, church, company store, and housing for employees. Today, the old school is used for town meetings and events, and Floriston is part of the Glenshire school district.

Over the years, families have moved back to Floriston creating an eclectic, diverse, and proud community of well-educated, independent-thinking people who value rural living. The town is responsible for all services including water, road, and sewer provision.

The Floriston Property Owners Association provides water, sewer, and road services to 43 parcels in Floriston, California.
