Waldorf Astoria Residences in Lake Tahoe

The redevelopment of the Tahoe Biltmore has gone through many false starts. However, it looks like its transition into the Waldorf Astoria Lake Tahoe is moving forward with an opening date planned for 2027.

This brings another 5-star hotel, resort and residence experience to Lake Tahoe. When the Ritz Carlton opened in 2009, it inspired many luxury developments around the Northstar community.  With the development of the Waldorf Astoria project, it can only enhance property values in the surrounding areas of Brockway, Crystal Bay and Kings Beach.

Hilton and EKN Development are partnering in this 15-acre mixed-use development. It will be located in Nevada, near the border of California. The Waldorf Astoria Lake Tahoe resort will include a casino, hotel with amenities, 134 guest rooms and 43 branded residences. SB Architects, who have designed many luxury resorts, are the designers.

About Waldorf Astoria

Waldorf Astoria is a luxury hotel brand known for its exceptional service, elegant accommodations, and rich history. It has been considered the world’s preeminent standard for the 5-star hotel, resort and residence experience.

The Waldorf Astoria brand originated from the legendary Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, which opened in 1931. The original hotel was known for hosting prominent figures, celebrities, and dignitaries, and it played a significant role in shaping the luxury hospitality industry.

They have maintained a reputation for providing a luxurious and unforgettable hospitality experience. This legacy adds to the brand's appeal and attracts travelers seeking a sophisticated and indulgent getaway.

Waldorf Astoria properties are often designed with a combination of classic and contemporary aesthetics. They exude luxury, incorporating upscale furnishings, fine art, and intricate details that create a sense of timeless elegance.

About the Branded Residences

The 43 Waldorf Astoria branded residences will have access to their 3-acre lakeside beach club and ski-in/ski-out mountain club in The Village at Northstar. It will boast gorgeous lake and mountain views, endless culinary delights, luxurious spa experiences, and curated nightlife.

“A primary goal was to create a natural, direct connection to the water beyond, which we achieved by elevating the lobby to capture expansive views of the lake,” says Keith Houchin, vice president and associate principal of SB Architects. “The lobby terraces down to an existing grove of trees, immersing guests in the natural landscape and creating a seamless flow between spaces. By creating a series of communal spaces to allow for year-round indoor/outdoor connections, guests can bask in the direct connection to the lake from the comfort of the resort and the surrounding idyllic setting.”

Waldorf Astoria Lake Tahoe will also boast a 10,000-square-foot casino and a slew of dining options, including an all-day dining brasserie, the brand’s signature Peacock Alley lounge, and a poolside restaurant. The resort will be managed by Hilton.

TRPA Approved Changes

To get approval from TRPA, key changes to the project were required. This included a reduction in the total number of rooms and the addition of employee housing.

Although the number of buildings remain the same to what was previously approved for the project, the revisions include several notable changes from the original plan:

A reduction in the number of hotel units to 134 from 275.

A decrease in the number of residential units to 43 from 59. The figure includes 18 units that have been constructed previously.

Affordable housing for employees totaling 38 bedrooms.

Elimination of a previously approved driveway at Boulder Way and the reduction in size of one building to allow for the expansion of the Grove public plaza.

The approved space for gaming and commercial use remains unchanged at 10,000 square feet and 18,700 square feet respectively.
